If you are new to Northeastern PA’s Pocono Mountains, here is a curated list of things to do around Lake Wallenpaupack. There is music to enjoy outdoors, the farmer’s market that takes over Hawley’s Bingham Park on Fridays, and the best way to spend an afternoon in the Poconos.
Each week I’ll share more personally recommended unique & fun things to do in the Pocono Lakes Region of Northeastern PA (NEPA).
Two Nights of Live Music, Back to Back
This Friday and Saturday give you two very different shows within a fifteen-minute drive of each other.
Friday, July 10, Sam Reider and the Human Hands play Harmony in the Woods at 19 Imagination Way in Hawley. It is folk, jazz, and chamber-acoustic, the kind of set that suits an amphitheater set back in the trees. Music starts at 6 p.m. and the parking gates open an hour before. Tickets run around $35. The venue is BYOB, so bring a chair or a blanket and pack a picnic. There is a golf-cart shuttle from the lot if you would rather not walk it. (570) 503-6685.
Saturday, July 11, the Wildflower Concert Series brings blues-rock guitarist Joanne Shaw Taylor to the Wildflower Amphitheater on the grounds of the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary on Long Ridge Road in White Mills. Concerts start at 6 p.m. and the seating area opens around 5. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, and yes, food and drinks including beer and wine are welcome outdoors. One nice quirk this year: any 2026 ticket is good for any one concert. If the weather turns, the show moves indoors to Wallenpaupack Area High School, where food and drink are not permitted. Call (570) 253-5500 after noon that day if the sky looks uncertain.
Friday Afternoon at the Market
One of the popular things to do near Lake Wallenpaupack is the Hawley Farmers Market. It’s open every Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Bingham Park through October, so you can stock a picnic or find some crafts before the Sam Reider show. Why not make an afternoon of it? Address: 133 Main Ave., Hawley PA 18428
Chase a Waterfall
Shohola Falls is one of the easiest waterfalls in the region to reach. That makes it a good one when you want the payoff without the mileage. It sits right off Route 6 near Brooks Cabin Rd in Shohola, Pike County. It’s a short drive east of Hawley toward Milford. The falls run about 75 feet wide, and the walk from the parking lot is only a few minutes. There is no fee. Wear sturdy shoes with traction, because the ledges get slick, keep an eye on kids near the water, and if you are there during hunting season, wear some orange like everyone else on state game land. Also note the grass may be a little high, depending on the time of year. It’s a beautiful waterfall to see with only a little effort.
Drive the Hawks Nest
If you have never done it, the Hawks Nest is the stretch of New York Route 97 that hugs the cliffs above the Delaware River just north of Port Jervis, about 45 minutes from Hawley. It is the road you have seen in a hundred car commercials, and yes, the one Doctor Strange crashes on. There are several pull-offs with big views up and down the river valley. Take it slow, the curves are tighter than they look. Making a day of it? Go shopping and eat in Port Jervis or Milford on the way. Worth the drive even on an overcast day.
Go Antiquing in Hawley
Great rainy day activity, or maybe you just like poking through other people’s history. Hawley has a real cluster of antiquing opportunities. Here are just a few. Start at the Hawley Antique Exchange at 209 Bellemonte Avenue, a multi-dealer mall that has been filling 8,000 square feet since 1993 (ask about the Vaseline glass room). From there, Miss Elly’s Antiques and Such at 518 Church Street is a blue Victorian house arranged room by room, almost like someone still lives there. Lady Lyonhardt’s Antique Boutique at 233 Main Avenue is the smaller, more curated end of things, vintage furniture and decorative pieces picked with an eye. Easy to spend an afternoon between the three.
Worth Putting on the Calendar Now
Lake Wallenpaupack turns 100 this year, and the Lake Wallenpaupack Centennial Celebration lands July 24 and 25. The headline event is the “Rock the Boat” boat parade on Saturday the 25th, lining up near Spinnler’s Point around 9 a.m. and starting at 10, with decorated boats competing for cash prizes. Official centennial merchandise is under the tents at the Lake Wallenpaupack Visitors Center at 2512 Route 6 in Hawley both days. It is two weeks out, but the boat parade has a registration deadline, so this is your heads-up.
Before you go: Dates, times, and prices shift, especially outdoor events at the mercy of the weather. I confirm what I can before posting, but check each venue’s own page or give them a call before you load the car.
Common Questions
Do I need to buy concert tickets ahead of time?
For Harmony in the Woods, yes, buy ahead. Shows there sell out, and some already have this season. For the Wildflower Series at Dorflinger, you can buy at the gate, and any 2026 ticket works for any one concert.
Is Shohola Falls a hard hike?
No. It is a short walk from the parking lot off Route 6, and it is free. Just wear real shoes because the rocks near the falls are slick, and it is state game land, so wear orange during hunting season.
What is happening for the Lake Wallenpaupack Centennial?
The main celebration is July 24 and 25, built around the “Rock the Boat” boat parade on Saturday and centennial merchandise at the Visitors Center. Boat parade entries have a registration deadline, so sign up early if you want in.
