POCONO LAKE COMMUNITIES

Popular Lake Communities in the Poconos & Northeast PA

Northeast Pennsylvania is full of private lake communities, each with its own personality, amenities, and rules. Here are some of the most popular ones, and where to see what is for sale in each.

Lake communities across the Northern Poconos

These popular lake communities are scattered across Pike, Wayne, and Monroe Counties in the Northern Pocono Mountains, and each one has its own mix of amenities. Some are gated, some are gated with full-time staff at the entrance, and some have no gate at all. Amenities range from lakes and beaches to pools, fitness centers, and clubhouses, and a few even offer horseback riding, skiing, or golf. Some communities allow short-term rentals with various restrictions, and others do not allow them at all.

Boating rules are worth checking early, because they vary a lot from community to community. Powerboat lakes allow gas motorboats and usually water skiing; but not all allow jet-skis. Non-powerboat lakes keep things quiet, limited to electric motors, canoes, kayaks, and the like, with no gas motorboats at all.

Some communities even have both kinds of lake. Fawn Lake Forest and Masthope are independent communities that share Westcolang Lake, a powerboat lake; but Fawn Lake Forest’s Fawn Lake is non-powerboat. The Hideout allows powerboats on Lake Roamingwood, while its other lakes are non-powerboat. Indian Rocks, Wallenpaupack Lake Estates, and Tanglwood Lakes offer access to Lake Wallenpaupack, a powerboat lake; WLE and Tanglwood also have non-power lake opportunities. Arrowhead Lake, Conashaugh Lakes, Gold Key Lake, Hemlock Farms, Lake Naomi, Locust Lake Village, Paupackan Lake Estates, Sunrise Lake, Twin Lakes, and Walker Lake are non-powerboat.

If a quieter, non-powerboat lake is more your speed, here is my guide to the non-powerboat lakes in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

This directory is a starting point, not the whole map. There are dozens of other lake communities across the region, and these are simply some of the most popular, buyer-favorite ones. Use any community’s button below to see what is currently for sale there.

Questions about the lake communities

Which Pocono lake communities allow short term rentals?

On this list, Arrowhead Lake, Big Bass Lake, Indian Rocks, Lake Naomi Club, Locust Lake Village, Masthope, The Hideout, and Wallenpaupack Lake Estates currently allow short term rentals, each with its own restrictions. A couple of communities, including Hemlock Farms and Walker Lake, allow rentals but require a 30-day minimum stay, which is generally treated as a longer-term rental rather than a true short term one. These rules are set by the community and sometimes the township, and they change, so confirm the current rules before you count on renting. There are other short-term rental communities as well. Contact me for more information on those.

Do non-powerboat lakes allow electric motors?

Most do, and some set a limit on motor size. A few lakes allow no motor at all, electric included, but as a general rule, non-powerboat just means gas engines are not allowed. Electric motors, kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards are usually fine.

Are all Poconos lake communities gated?

Many are. Some have a single gate, some have full-time staffed gates around the clock, like The Hideout’s two 24-hour entrances, and a few have no gate at all. Each community sets its own access, amenities, and dues.

What counties are these communities in?

These communities sit in Pike, Wayne, and Monroe Counties in the Northern Poconos, all within the Lake Wallenpaupack and greater Pocono lake region.

Not sure which community fits?

Tell me how you want to use your lake home, how much you want from an HOA, and whether renting it out matters, and I will point you to the communities worth your time.
