151 Orion Way: Kitchen Then & Now
One of the first things the owners did was renovate the kitchen. While functional, it was dated and awkwardly designed. Upgraded hickory cabinets replaced the more mundane builder-grade oak. The well-executed workflow change creates a more efficient space for meal prep. Moving the range and refrigerator helped open the space and make it feel less cluttered. Laminate counters with a dated butcher block look were replaced with beautiful granite. A river rock back splash (goodbye, original wallpaper border!) completes the modern look. The change is dramatic!

Indian Rocks Lake House Deck Before & After
Another renovation undertaken by the owners of 151 Orion Way was updating the deck. Previously the deck was made of pressure treated lumber with an old fashioned spindle railing. Now the deck has a fresh, modern feel. Additionally, the deck is now low maintenance thanks to composite boards and a sleek metal railing. Finally, the owners improved the back yard by enhancing the fire pit area. They took advantage of the plentiful trees and hung a hammock for relaxing after a day on Lake Wallenpaupack!

Lower Level / Basement Before & After!
Perhaps the most dramatic change came with the finishing of the basement. When the owners purchased 151 Orion Way in 2012, the basement was unfinished. Not only that, but access to the basement was limited to an outside entrance. While there was a ladder-style staircase inside, it was only accessible through a trap door in what was the kitchen pantry. The owners removed the pantry and created a standard staircase to the basement. Downstairs, they kept half of the basement unfinished for utility, storage, and work space. They created two rooms in the other half. One room features six built in bunk beds (complete with their own individual reading lights). The other room is spacious enough to become a family/TV room or game room, but is currently being used as a guest space. Alternatively, it would make a great office or hobby room. Further renovations included the replacement of all the interior doors. The beautiful, knotty alder doors seen today were not originally in the house. Throughout the home, all the interior doors were inexpensive hollow core doors made of thin lauan (luan) veneer. Replacing the doors was an expensive undertaking but the payoff was worth it. Knotty alder is a hardwood often chosen for its understated, elegant appearance. The doors feature a graceful arch at the top and provide a uniform look throughout the home. Additionally, all of the baseboard and door moldings were replaced.
